Someone had tainted the sugar at the newly opened Café Caffé coffeehouse in the village of Eastport. A dozen locals got seriously ill and one died. Nora Huggins- mother, wife, mystery buff and want-to-be sleuth-couldn’t help but to get involved. Her delving into the crime led her to believe that it had been a nasty youthful prank. Two of the village’s old spinster sisters, Winnie and Ginnie Miller, were among those who fell victim to the tainted sugar. However, when Winnie suddenly died, surviving Ginnie chose not to hold the coffeehouse responsible. Because of the Miller sister’s reputation for being uncharitable, Nora became suspicious and probed deeper into their affairs ultimately discovering that Winnie may have in fact been murdered. Proving it became a delicate matter for Nora and the local police chief.

This was one of the first stories I bought after getting a Kindle. I thought the main character was good, and there were enough red-herrings to make it a true whodunit. As a story, the writing holds up well, and I didn't have any issues with word choice, with one notable exception.

Gastric Lavage is mentioned in another review, and plays a central role in the solution. The problem is that the most common way to do it is not the same things that is described. The story still works, because getting one's stomach pumped is miserable regardless of the path to the stomach.

A bigger issue for me was the "aha" moment. That one bit of evidence that locked the villain down didn't work for me, because I know far too many people that would, and do, act in the exact way the protagonist said no one in that situation would. I'm trying hard to not say too much.

As a mystery, I'd say 2.5, because the solution was based on the protag's opinion of how a person would act, rather than on firm evidence. As a story, 4.0.

Grounds for Murder eBook Russo John Delilah K Stephans Lea Schizas Reviews

John Russo has crafted a suspenseful tale in Grounds for Murder. His writing is crisp, clear, and engaging. This is a page-turner which will keep the reader guessing as to "who done it."
If you are looking for a mystery with a twist, Grounds for Murder should prove satisfying. This short story develops a situation with characters you can recognise and a sleuth how won't give up till the mystery is solved. As clues and suspects accumulate the reader might think they have the killer tagged. Don't be too sure.
John Russo manages to keep us guessing till the end.
E-publishing has opened up the world of short fiction and John Russo is another author who has mastered the short mystery genre by writing a taut, fully rounded story that kept me reading straight through its forty-two pages. It has everything--a crime with multiple victims, red-herrings and who done it disguised well enough to keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book to mystery buffs and cozy mystery fans alike.
This is my first encounter with John Russo and I'm pretty sure it won't be my last. As an historical buff, I strayed into mysteries and found I love them. Mr. Russo tickled my fancy with his tale of a local coffee shop, several people suffering sudden episodes of illness, and he kept me turning pages to find out 'whodunnit.' This is a quick and entertaining read that kept me engaged while I flew from TN to Alaska. Good job, Mr. Russo, and thanks for distracting a white-knuckle flyer from the obvious bumps in the road. I enjoyed your creative mind.
This is book one in John Russo's cozy murder mystery series starring Nora Huggins. People are ending up getting their stomachs pumped after having coffee in the gourmet coffee shop in Nora's upper middle class town and she's suspicious.

Being an avid reader of murder mysteries, every bell and whistle inside her agile mind is going TILT. She just KNOWS she can figure out what's really going on, before it gets serious...but can she?

I've read many cozies in my day and this book stacks up quite favorably with the ones I keep going back to. Nora Huggins is likable energetic, determined, and intelligent. I found her husband a bit of a nuisance with his constant fears of an insurance payout by his company if she stirred the pot too vigorously. I know that's the way the world works, but I wanted to bop him a time or two.

Still, over all, this is a delightful cozy foundation with Nora's character one I really enjoyed in book two FORECAST FOR MURDER...(her hubby was not on the scene at ALL!)

Ergo GROUNDS FOR MURDER has proven itself worthy of 4 stars from me and a request from me to Mr. Russo...NORA, NORA, BRING US MORE NORA!
